Freshfields Village Welcomes Aurora Robson Art Installation

9 February 2022

In March, Freshfields Village in partnership with the Kiawah Conservancy, welcomes a temporary art installation by Aurora Robson. The original sculpture, Troika, will be on display at the Lakeside Park in the Village through the end of April 2022. Troika is comprised of three blue and white spires that appear to emerge from the earth. The spires are made from welded industrial plastic debris (old barrels and bins) taken from the waste stream. They have an internal glow at night from solar powered lights located in their spines. Troika references how plants grow in a meandering fashion – but ultimately towards the light. It also speaks to the potential of shifting the direction of our downward spiral of waste into an upward spiral of innovation.

On Wednesday, March 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, join us for an Artist Reception & Unveiling Party at the Lakeside Dock. Guests can enjoy cocktails, light appetizers, and music while meeting the artist and viewing Troika.

Ahead of the unveiling, join Kiawah Conservancy on Wednesday, March 16 at 4:00 pm for The Art of Conservation, an exciting presentation by Erin Simon of the World Wildlife Fund and artist, Aurora Robson. Simon and Robson will discuss plastic pollution, art, conservation, and more. The presentation will take place at the Kiawah Island Town Hall and additional details are available here. Seating is limited, please register in advance.

About the Kiawah Conservancy:

The Kiawah Conservancy is a non-profit, accredited land trust focused on the preservation and restoration of natural habitats and conservation education. The Conservancy’s mission is to measure, manage, improve, and advocate for the ecological health of Kiawah Island and its environs. Now celebrating our 25th year, the Kiawah Conservancy has preserved over 60 properties, including over 2,000 acres of tidal saltmarsh and hummock islands within the Kiawah River watershed and we’re working to preserve more every day! Learn more about the Kiawah Conservancy online and join in our efforts.

About the Artist:

Aurora Robson is multi-media artist known predominantly for her innovative meditative work intercepting the waste stream. Her practice consists of creating visual hybrids between her own semi-abstract childhood nightmares and forms found in nature. It is a meditation on integration fueled by gratitude. She works to create harmony in uncomfortable areas ripe with neglect, friction, and chaos.

A recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Sculpture, a TED/Lincoln Re-Imagine Prize and a National Endowment for the Arts Art Work Grant, Robson has exhibited her work internationally in museums, galleries and non-traditional spaces since 2002. In addition to her studio practice, Robson is the founding artist of Project Vortex, an international collective of artists, designers and architects who are also working with plastic debris to transform toxic waste into art objects and valuable cultural experiences.

Artist Statement:

The majority of the work I’ve been doing over the past eighteen years has been centered around exploring plastic debris as a viable art material. Over this time, I’ve developed a variety of methods, ranging from riveting, to threading, tying, injection welding, using an industrial sewing machine and ultrasonic welding. I see vast potential in this environmentally problematic material for art applications wherein it can do no harm and its longevity becomes an asset. Currently, I’m evolving my practice to integrate making filament from plastic debris that I will then use in 3d printing as well as injection welding.

I invite people to join me in re-imagining this material so that common misconceptions around it are eliminated. I take a serious play approach to working with plastic debris – partially in order to offset the depressing nature of it so that we are more comfortable confronting it. Through my work, I offer creative solutions to problems we humans have created for ourselves.

People tend to think of plastic as disposable, when it is precisely the opposite. Plastic does not biodegrade, rather photo-degrades, and only ever so slowly. This slow photo-degradation ultimately results in only smaller particulates, which are increasingly difficult to remove from our most valuable shared natural resources, namely water and air. While extracting plastic debris from its problematic destructive fate, I highlight its potential to become a harmless source of beauty and enjoyable reflection — instead of a toxic waste nightmare.

I give everyday objects a fantastical, intimate, playful quality for people to marvel at. Through my work, I aim to create conditions for hope and to serve as a catalyst for the proliferation of creative stewardship initiatives. After a few years of working with plastic debris, I also founded Project Vortex, an international collective of artists, designers and architects who also work with the material. Additionally, I often assist academic institutions in the implementation of course work I designed to help share some of my methods. In addition to my studio practice, I am dedicated to promoting a more robust culture of creative stewardship around this global problem.

Our Village visitors love furry friends as much as we do. The most popular photos shared at Freshfields are those of our four-legged friends, and we’d have to agree!

DogSpot arrived at Freshfields Village on July 27, 2019 as one of our favorite furry friends, @charlestonmax, welcomed the cool air… and so did you! Bring your canine pal to the Village and we’ve got a cozy air-conditioned sanctuary waiting.

There’s always a relaxing place to enjoy your surroundings at the Village, especially for your four-legged friends.

Pamper your pal like they’re the best in show with a trip to Dolittle’s for the newest spring collar, supplies, treats, toys, and more before heading to the beach. They are certain to leave with more than a smile!

We are proud to welcome your pet to our pet-friendly community. Everyone deserves to take a break, so check out all the ways you can Bring Fido to Freshfields Village!

Favorite Freshfields Photos: Wondrous Wildlife

Many of our visitors head to the Village to enjoy all the wondrous wildlife all around… and you made sure to capture it at Freshfields!

National Nature Photography Day is one of our favorite days at Freshfields. This best moment was captured from one of the many great shots our island provides every day.

No better way to start the day than a trip to the beach, especially when you catch a glimpse of wildlife that is deer to our hearts. Photo credit: @pobphoto.

Exploring the island for a chance to catch the wildlife is best on a bike! Don’t forget to stop by SeaCoast Sports and Outfitters to rent a kayak or bike on your next quest to see our wildlife.

Our island’s wildlife amazes us every single day! The Town of Kiawah shared this beautiful shot of a mother and calf recently spotted in a Kiawah creek back in January of 2019.

Favorite Freshfields Photos: Stunning Sunsets

Nothing says a relaxed, Lowcountry setting like a stunning sunset. These breathtaking views had you daydreaming all day long for a visit to Freshfields.

The most popular reaction to this best moment? “My happy place!” We’re always excited to welcome you back to your happy place at Freshfields Village.

Serene sunsets like this one from June 14, 2020 made it hard for us to stop gazing! Next time you’re looking to watch the sunset on our lakeside deck, head over to GDC Homes to wrap yourself in a comfy, soft blanket!

Can you believe this is your view when staying at the Andell Inn? Let the colors take you away when you visit the Village.

5 Fall Trends You Can Find at Freshfields Village

2 September 2020

Cooler days are just around the corner, and it’s time to freshen up your fall wardrobe! A new season is the perfect excuse for a closet refresh, and the retailers at Freshfields Village are bringing in trendy, new styles daily.

Say hello to fall with these five fashion trends, inspired by runways around the world.

Performance-Oriented Fashion

This season’s fashion is focused on comfort and style working hand-in-hand. Tommy Bahama, located next door to Cantina 76, is offering the perfect selection of pullovers and sweaters that strike the right tone between pajama cozy and corporate comfy. Transition from late-Summer’s cool air-conditioned mornings to Fall’s crisp, fresh days with the wide selection of transitional clothing at Tommy Bahama to layer all season long.

Accessorize Autumn

Autumn is all about accessorizing. Gloves are the next perfect fall accessory for both style and safety all season long. Visit Holly & Brooks to immerse yourself in high-quality and beautiful accessories for this trend, which is located in the Village Green. The trending men’s fall accessories include neckties and snugly fit beanies. Whether sticking to solid colors or a stylish, patterned tie, stop by vineyard vines for the elements of elegance you need.

Step Into Fall

Embrace fall fashion with a giant step into the season. Combine practicality with comfort at Trés Carmen for a new pair of booties, the shoes you can look forward to stomping through this season in, or a pair of rain boots right next door at Coastal Footwear. Trending men’s shoes highlight the Chelsea Boot, which is appropriate for all different types of occasions and comes in both suede or leather–also available at Coastal Footwear.

Power Dressing

What women’s style can you expect this fall? Power dressinga contrast of wearing tailored, masculine-inspired clothing including suits, trousers or dresses. Step into J.McLaughlin on the Village Green for classic prints and lightweight blouses and dresses, which are the perfect for transition to fall! Or shop at TINA Stephens to arm your wardrobe with a few essential pieces, located across the street from Java Java.

Functional Outerwear Only

Men’s fashion this Autumn is focused on functionality. Browse the wide selection of puffer vests and clothing items with extra pockets, straps and compartments at Seacoast Sports Outfitters to add some athleisure and street style looks to your closet. Instead of grabbing a large coat or light jacket, consider reaching for a cardigan to elevate your outfit. Grab one from Southern Tide’s large selection of classic apparel.

Fall for your favorite fashion trends and visit us any day of the week. With the variety of options available right at the Village, we know you’ll be on trend.

With slip covers and the stain resistant technology of Crypton and other performance fabrics your upholstered furniture will stay beautiful for years.

All of the GDC Home slipcover fabrics are easy care and with recommended cleaning instructions available here. One of the advantages of white slipcovers is the ability to add bleach to your washing machine for maximum stain removal. Your covers will come out like new every time.

Celebrate Dad at The Village This Father’s Day

9 June 2020

Father’s Day, June 21, is just around the corner and you’re likely thinking about how to celebrate the important man in your life. As Charleston opens up more each day, get dad out of the house and give him the recognition he deserves with some of these Father’s Day gift ideas.

For the Family

Treat dad to a special experience with the entire family! How does a weekend getaway sound to spend quality time away from home? Check out the availability at the Andell Inn located in the Village. Enjoy a relaxing stay at the boutique hotel, stroll through the Village to enjoy shopping and dining just a few steps away, rent bikes and venture to the beach.

For the Foodie

Dad might not be the breakfast in bed type, so think about dining al fresco on Sunday, June 21! Restaurants throughout the Village are open for indoor and outdoor dining with limited capacity. Make a reservation at one of our onsite restaurants and treat dad to some quality time over a favorite meal.

If you’re not ready to dine out, all of the Village restaurants are offering takeout options and curbside pick up. Select one of his favorite spirits at Kiawah Spirits and mix up a signature cocktail just for him!

For the Outdoorsman

For dads that prefer to get active and outside, Seacoast Sports and Outfitters is your one-stop-shop. Spend some time on the water with their kayak and paddleboard rentals or explore the island by bike with their bike rentals. Get outside and active to build some memories this Father’s Day.

Pair your experience with some new gear! The shop carries an extensive selection of brands. Some of our favorite picks include YETI coolers and drinkware, Free Fly outdoor apparel, Smith eye-wear, or everyday goodies for fishing, golf, and more.

For the Stylish Dad

If your dad cares more about trendy styles this summer, pick him up something he’ll be proud to put in his closet. Most retailers in the Village are now open, but many still offer phone orders and curbside pick-up. The shops at the Village provide a number of options to select the perfect Father’s Day gift.

For a classic island look, stop by J.McLaughlin, Tommy Bahama, vineyard vines or Southern Tide. Southern Tide is even offering 20% off all gifts for dad until the 21st and Coastal Footwear is offering 20% off all footwear this month. For some stylish, new activewear, lululemon has you covered. View the full list of retailers here.

Finding the perfect gift to show dad how much you appreciate him doesn’t have to be stressful! With the variety of options available right at the Village, we hope you’ll be able to find something special.
