Protecting Our Island

17 July 2019

Effective September 8, 2019, all businesses operating within the Town of Kiawah Island, including Freshfields Village, are prohibited from distributing the following items to their customers:

1) Single-Use Plastic Carryout Bags

2) Plastic Straws

3) Products Made from Polystyrene Foam (Styrofoam)

In addition, the ordinance prohibits possession of these items and balloons on the beach.

Kiawah Town Council passed this new Ordinance on June 4 to regulate the use of harmful materials and promote the use of environmentally preferred materials. The goal of this Ordinance is to protect Kiawah’s natural environment, waterways, and marine life to ensure a positive environmental impact on our island for generations to come. For additional information and FAQs, please visit the Town of Kiawah Island’s website.

Wanting to spend the day on the water? You’re in luck. SeaCoast Sports and Outfitters rents kayaks and paddleboards so that you can have a fun day at the beach or in one of the island’s creeks. If water sports aren’t your style, SeaCoast Sports and Outfitters also offers bike rentals for you to explore the island!

Get Creative
For the days it’s too hot to do anything outside, fragrance pouring at Palmetto Scent Studio is a fun activity that everyone in the family is sure to love. Whether you choose to pour a home fragrance or a body product, you’ll find your perfect custom scent and will definitely have fun creating it. As an added bonus, enjoy Christmas in July in the studio this month! When the kids are out of school, sometimes it’s hard to find activities to keep them busy. Sign them up for in-store activities at Wonder Works every Thursday at 11:00 am! It’s only $8 per child and they get to take home their creation.

Bring Fido to the Village for a Pet-Friendly Outing
Have fido with you? A majority of events happening in Freshfields Village allow pets. Additionally, pet-friendly stores and patios are indicated by decals. If you’re planning to go into stores that aren’t pet friendly, Freshfields Village’s new DogSpot is a safe space for your dog to stay while you finish shopping. Learn more about our new pet-friendly initiatives here.

Grab a Beach Read
Indigo Books is one of the few remaining independent bookstores in the state. They offer a wide selection of books for you and the little ones. Not only do they have books, but they also have jigsaw puzzles, stationary, and so much more. This is the best place to stop and grab a book before heading to the beach!
