About Backpack Buddies Program:

The Kiawah Women’s Foundation (Backpack Buddies) mission is to combat childhood hunger. The Kiawah Women’s Foundation is a 501 (c)3 non-profit, all volunteer organization.

The Backpack Buddies mission is to proactively combat childhood hunger in “at risk” children at Angel Oak Elementary, Frierson Elementary and Haut Gap Middle Schools on Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. Most of these children live below the poverty level. KWF’s Backpack Buddy program began in 2013 providing food for 25 students and currently serves over 360 children. Each week this group prepares bags filled with healthy, shelf-stable foods that the children can prepare on their own. Each backpack contains 11 items including fresh fruit, 2 lunch items, 2 breakfast items and a host of nourishing snacks. These bags are discretely slipped into the child’s backpack, and sent home with the child on Friday to sustain them over the weekend. The cost is approximately $5.50 per bag per student.

It is our belief and our experience that a hungry child cannot learn. The social workers and the teachers at our backpack buddy schools have told us that they have seen great improvements in the children’s attentiveness and energy on Monday mornings. They have also stated that the parents are very appreciative to have this assistance. Hunger lives five miles away. We believe that this program helps the children come to school ready to learn. Our other activities include a teen Christmas gift program, an emergency clothing closet at the schools and supporting two middle school book clubs.
