On Johns, Kiawah, and Seabrook Islands, life is shaped by the land and water around us. Our marshes, maritime forests, tidal creeks, and shorelines are more than scenery—they are the foundation of our communities, our livelihoods, and our shared sense of home. Everyone who lives here or visits becomes part of this delicate and interconnected ecosystem.
Since 1997, Conservancy of the Sea Islands has worked to safeguard the lands, waters, and wildlife that define our Sea Islands. As a nationally accredited land trust and leader in science-based conservation, environmental restoration, and education, the Conservancy partners with landowners, residents, businesses, and public agencies to preserve the natural resources that sustain both people and wildlife.
To date, the Conservancy has permanently protected nearly 4,000 acres of ecologically significant land across Johns, Kiawah, and Seabrook Islands. Among these efforts is The Gathering Ground—a 100-acre conservation preserve along Betsy Kerrison Parkway that is currently being transformed into a vibrant, publicly accessible space where nature, culture, and community come together.
